Millie Dunn Veasey



Millie Dunn Veasey was born in Raleigh, North Carolina on January 31, 1918 to the late Pleasant H. and Eugenia H. Dunn. Millie left this earthly abode and joined her Heavenly Father on March 9, 2018.

Millie attended Raleigh Pubic Schools and graduated from Washington High School in 1942. In 1943, Millie enlisted in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corp. Over several years with the army, she was stationed throughout the United States as well as Birmingham, England and Rouen, France. During her overseas service, she was a member of the 6888 Central Postal Battalion. She was discharged with a final rank of Staff Sergeant.

Millie returned to the United States to complete her education at St. Augustine’s College on the GI Bill. She graduated in 1953 with a degree in business administration and a minor in English. After teaching high school in Virginia, she returned to Raleigh to work as Executive Secretary to the President at St. Augustine’s College. She received her Master’s Degree in Business Education at North Carolina Central University. She continued to advance her career at St. Augustine’s College until retirement in 1988 as Director of Career Planning and Placement Cooperative Education.

Millie married Warren Veasey and became a mother to Warren Jr. and Juanita Veasey who loved and cherished her always. She was a devoted member of St. Ambrose Episcopal Church. She always expressed her love for the Lord and was sustained by her faith.

Millie was very active in community and civic organizations. She was the first female president of the Raleigh Chapter of the NAACP. She organized and hosted several events during the height of the civil rights movement. She later became very active with the National Federation of Democratic Women and the American Legion. Millie was a very proud member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority. She served in many leadership roles both locally, regionally, and nationally. . She was instrumental in assisting in the charter of new chapters locally.

Millie leaves to cherish her memory her brother McKeever R. Dunn, Sr., son Warren Veasey, Jr., daughter Juanita Veasey Manley, two grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of relatives and friends.

Funeral service 12:00 noon Friday March 16, 2018 at St. Ambrose Episcopal Church 813 Darby Street, Raleigh, NC preceded by an 11:15 AM visitation.

Viewing from 2:00 - 5:00 PM Thursday March 15, 2018 at Haywood Funeral Home.

Wake from 6:00 - 8:00 PM Thursday March 15, 2018 in the C.A. Haywood, Sr. Memorial Chapel.

Interment will take place at 11:00 AM Monday March 19, 2018 at Raleigh National Cemetery.
