William H. Mangum was born on November 11, 1932 in Wake Forest, North Carolina to the late Lenwood Mangum, Sr. and Delores Jeffries Mangum. He attended and graduated from W.E.B. Du Bois High School as Valedictorian in 1950. Mr. Mangum attended Lincoln University in Oxford, PA where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology.
Mr. Mangum began his career in education, teaching biology in Chatham and Pitt counties. He was appointed Assistant Principal to South Ayden High School in 1968. After teaching and working in school administration, Mr. Mangum decided to change careers and became the first African American Parole Officer in Cumberland County in 1970. Following his passion for politics, he became an aide to the former US Senator Robert Morgan in 1980. After several positions with various State government agencies, Mr. Mangum finished his illustrious career with the State of North Carolina as a Criminal Investigator with the North Carolina Department of Insurance.
Mr. Mangum was outgoing and never met a stranger. In addition to his work with the State of North Carolina and his passion for campaigning, he was known for his love of selling cars. Mr. Mangum was also active in his community, serving as the National President of the Du Bois Alumni Association, an active and dedicated member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, and a Trustee at First Cosmopolitan Baptist Church.
Mr. Mangum is survived by; his devoted wife Brenda Mangum of Raleigh, North Carolina; his daughter, Terra Mangum Roberts, son-in-law, Jamie Azi Roberts, and grandchildren, Kennedy and William Roberts of Washington, DC; brother-in-law, Paul D. Williams and wife Tammy Williams of Dunn, NC, three nephews; Ronwood Mangum, Roderick Williams, and Kail Malloy, three nieces;Sophia Johnson, Crystal Williams, and Kimberly Griffis and a host of cousins and other loving relatives and friends.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, February 15, 2021 at the Graveside at Carolina Biblical Gardens, 1530 Creech Road, Garner, NC. ... On Sunday there will be a "public walk through viewing" from 5 PM to 7 PM at Haywood Funeral Home, 2415 South Wilmington St. Raleigh, NC.

We are limited to accept a total of 50 individuals per the State guidelines for any indoor services due to the COVID-19 Pandemic! .... Thank you for understanding.
