Wade Hampton Smith, Sr. was born on July 19, 1928 from the union of the late Howard and Julia Maye Smith of Raleigh, NC. He passed on to his heavenly rest on Wednesday, January 13, 2021 at 8:55pm. Wade was married to the late Marceline Laws Smith for over fifty years and was blessed with five children, Ava (deceased), Wade Jr. (deceased), Michael (Renee), Kerry (Dora), and Clifton Leroy.
Wade was a dedicated husband and father. His life was highlighted by his dedicated work ethic as he worked as the Supervisor of Maintenance for over fifty years at the Washington Terrace Apartments. He gave his sweat and blood to ensure the residents of Washington Terrace lived in the best housing conditions. Upon his retirement, he was honored on June 23, 1997 by having the Washington Terrace Clubhouse named after him. His other work included doing all kinds of jobs for family and friends. Brother Wade never failed to help anyone he could by fixing their televisions, radios and housing repairs.
He graduated from Washington High School (Raleigh, NC) in 1946 and distinguished himself as President of the Science Club (44-45), Student Council (44—46), and President of Senior Class (45-46). He entered the U. S. Army after high school and served honorably. He was affectionately known as “FRAME” in his early years because of extraordinary intelligence and ability to put things together and make them work. He was true “RALIEGHITE” spending his entire life in Raleigh, NC.
Brother Wade was faithful husband to his wife Marceline and father to his children. He was the sole income for his family. He taught his children the value of an honest day’s work and having honesty and integrity in dealing with others. His Christian membership/discipleship began at Martin Street Baptist Church (Pastor Paul H. Johnson) and transferred to Christian Faith Baptist Church (Pastor David C. Forbes, Sr.) until his passing.
Wade was preceded in death by his siblings Jesse, Howard, Alice, Clifton, Claude, and Doris. His remaining baby brother and best friend is Carl Smith of Raleigh. His love for his eighteen grandchildren includes Nick, Dee, Cretia, Jeremiah, Sabrina, Gabriel, David, Marcus, Angela, Kris, Kerry, Elkavia, Katrina, Tiara, Michael J., Dedrick, Faith, and Joel, and a great host of great grandchildren.
(Special appreciation to baby boy Clifton who served as his primary caregiver over the years).
