Paul Hampton

With a whisper “I love you” in our ear, Paul Hampton slipped into eternal rest on Saturday June 6, 2020.

Paul Hampton “also known as Hamp” was born on August 28, 1939 in Rocky Mount, NC to Elizabeth White Diggs. He was raised by Reverend Charles and Eria Hampton. “Hamp” was educated in the Rocky Mount School System and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School, and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics from Saint Augustine’s College now Saint Augustine University.

“Hamp” was a Mathematics school teacher for numerous years in Goochland County, VA and City of Richmond Public Schools. He was also known throughout the neighborhood he lived in to challenge the children, his nieces and nephews, to bring home good grades on their report card. For every “A” earned on their report card he would gladly give one dollar. Even some that did not deserve it he would give one dollar even though they tried.

“Hamp” received numerous awards. One of the awards he was proud of was the Outstanding Alumni Award from Saint Augustine College. He served on the National Alumni Committee as the Social Committee Chairperson for numerous terms. “Hamp” even recruited high school students and sponsored bus trips to give tours of different colleges in the Virginia and North Carolina area.

“Hamp” was preceded in death by his birth mother, Elizabeth White Diggs; his adopted parents, Reverend Charlie and Eria Hampton; brothers, Henry “Hank” White and George White; sisters, Linda Caude, Carolyn Jackson, and Effie White.

“Hamp” left to cherish his memory his wife, Geraldine “Gerri” Hampton of Raleigh, NC; daughter, Allison H. Davis (Jerrold) of Raleigh, NC; son, Corey R. Smith (Rena) of Richmond, VA; granddaughter, Michelle R. Davis; sisters-in-law, Armenta “Peggy” Moore of Richmond, VA and Frances White of Neward, NJ; best friend, Gurtha Gilchrist of Richmond, VA; and a host of nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday June 13, 2020 in the CA Haywood, Sr. Memorial Chapel beginning at 11:00 AM.  There will be a walk through viewing prior to the service beginning at 10:00 AM in the chapel.

***Please note:  We ask that all participants during the viewing and service wear a face covering or mask.  The funeral service will be limited to 50 individuals, to include family, clergy, funeral home staff, and close friends.
