Mernilla Jean (Judd) Gaines

 Funeral Service will be at 1:00 PM Thursday, November 12, 2020 in the C.A. Haywood, Sr. Memorial Chapel, 2415 South Wilmington Street, in Raleigh, preceded by a 12:30 PM visitation.  A "walk through" viewing is scheduled from 2:00 - 8:00 PM on Wednesday November 11, 2020 at Haywood Funeral Home.

Mernilla Jean Judd Gaines was born to the late Theodore Judd and Josephine
Womack Judd on April 5, 1946 in Broadway, NC and entered into eternal rest
on Tuesday, November 3, 2020 at Transition Life Care in Raleigh, NC. Mernilla
Jean was the tenth of fourteen siblings. Eleven preceded her in death: sisters,
Lucille Judd and Lillian Judd Williams, and brothers, Glasco Judd, James Judd,
Henry Judd, Joseph Judd, Peter Judd,Thomas Judd, Alfonzia Judd, Clifton Judd
and Steward Judd.

Mernilla Jean was educated in the Harnett County Public Schools, graduating
from Shawtown School in 1964. She attended Sandhill Commmunity College
where she attained a degree in Registered Nursing. She worked in Wake County
and Nash County for over forty years as a Registered Nurse.

Mernilla Jean was owner of Gaines Family Care in Garner, NC for many years.

Mernilla Jean attended Chapel Hill AME Zion Church in Broadway, NC at an
early age. She later moved to Raleigh, NC and later became a member of Mt.
Calvary Word of Faith Church. She was an active member of Mt. Calvary Word
of Faith Church under the leadership of Pastor Shirley Caesar Williams until her
health failed.

Mernilla Jean was united in marriage to Joseph Gaines, Sr. on June 29, 1969.
From that union are four children.

She leaves to cherish her memories a loving husband of fifty years, Joseph Gaines,
Sr.; sons, James (Valarie) Gaines of Fuquay-Varina, NC, Joseph Gaines, Jr. of
Raleigh, NC and Charles Speed of Hope Mills, NC; step-daughter, Angella
(Gregory) Rogers of Sanford NC; grandchildren, Jamica Hinton, Corey Gaines,
Chelsea Gaines, Chancellor Gaines, Corey Speed, Chase Speed, Ali Dupree
Denning, Jeremiah Roger, Antwan Lane and Jerell Joyner; great-grandchildren,
Omaree Adams, Jr. and Mekhi Adams; brother, Nathaniel Judd of Sanford NC;
sister, Betty Judd (Bishop) Williams of Raleigh, NC; sisters-in-law, Lois Judd,
Margaret Judd and Janice (Bob) McKoy; brother-in-law, Michael Gaines; and a
host of nieces, nephews, cousins and devoted friends.
