Mazie Lewis Obituary

Mrs. Mazie Lewis, 75, of Raleigh, NC departed this earthly life on Monday March 28, 2022.  Her Celebration of Life Service will be held on Tuesday, April 5, 2022, at 12:00 PM in the C A Haywood, Sr. Memorial Chapel, 2415 South Wilmington Street, Raleigh, NC 27603.  A Public Viewing and Visitation is scheduled prior to the service beginning at 11:00 AM.  There will be no viewing on Monday. The Interment will follow at Carolina Biblical Gardens, 1530 Creech Road, in Garner, NC. 27529. 

Mazie graduated from J.W. Ligon High School in Raleigh, NC. She received a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Saint Augustine College (now Saint Augustine University) in 1970. Upon graduation, she moved to Chicago, IL, for a teaching position in elementary education. She returned to Raleigh, NC, to take care of her mother in the early ’80s. Mazie received a Master’s degree in Counselor Education- Personnel and Guidance Services from North Carolina State University.

Mazie has spent her career focusing on making a difference in students’ lives as an elementary teacher on the southside of Chicago and at North Carolina State University in Academic Affairs for the College of Engineering. Her days at the university were never the same, and she strived to assist students with academic issues, personal problems and provide guidance through the challenges of university life. She retired in July 2016 after 31 years of service.

Mazie was an advocate for people, especially in the black community, a member of many professional organizations. They include Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated Omicron Zeta Chapter, Capital Area Section of the National Council of Negro Women, Incorporated, Ruth Chapter #2 Order of the Eastern Star PHA, Woman’s Business Association, St. AUG Alumni Association, and a member of the High Sunday Ladies Red Hat Society.

Mazie was a Diamond Life Member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated. She was inducted into the Omicron Zeta Chapter in 1992, where she held almost every position. Most notably, Mazie served as president for two terms, from 2004-to 2008. She has also served as the 1st,2nd, and 3rd vice president and secretary of Omicron Zeta. Before her passing, she was the chairperson of the Finer Womanhood Celebration and Amicae’s sponsor. Mazie also served on the Blue Revue Committee and was the emcee of last year’s Blue Revue. She held appointed positions on the State (Life Member Coordinator) and Regional (Historian Committee) levels at her passing. She has also served as Assistant Secretary for the Eastern Region during her time In Zeta.

Mazie was the 1st vice president of the NC State Coalition of the National Council of Negro Women, Inc. under the leadership of Queen Degraphenreid, the presiding president. Over the years, Mazie also held several positions in the coalition. She was a Chartered Member of the Capital Area Section of the National Council of Negro Women, Inc. She held almost every office in the Section, including the office of president. She has been a member for 25 years. Mazie served as the recording secretary of CAS and the Chair of Raleigh Rescue Mission for the past two years and wrote articles published in the local newspaper and journals.

Mazie Bell leaves to cherish her memories, a loving and devoted husband Bill Harris Lewis, mother-in-law Patty Jean Watley, three sisters-in-law, Shirley Ann Lewis of Huntsville, AL; Carol Lynn Venable (Ronnie), Glynis G. Lewis of Raleigh, NC; three brother-in-laws John William Thurston of Louisa, VA; Gregory Eugene Lewis and Anthony C. Lewis of Raleigh, NC; two aunts, Louise McClean, Durham, NC; Caroline Williams, Richmond, VA; nine nieces, Marlene Thurston Tweedy and Monica M. Thurston of Carson, CA,  Malquis Oakley (Earnest), Wendy Snell (Sam), and Camella Lewis of Raleigh, NC, HeKema Jordan, of Huntsville, AL,  LaRhondia Lewis, Shanara Taylor, Tenisha Sherin of Henderson, NC; seven nephews Myron M. Thurston of Louisa, VA; Mark M. Thurston of Owens Mills, MD, Akeem Lewis of Henderson, NC, Ahmad Taylor, Decatur, AL, Ali Lewis of Warrington, NC, Brian Sherin of Warrington, NC, Ronnie Lewis (Amanda) of Kittrell, NC, six great nieces, fifteen great nephews, cousins, sorority sisters, fraternity brothers, auxillary friends, church family, extended family, and friends.

***Please Note:  We are requesting that all in attendance wear a face covering or mask for the viewing, visitation, and service.  Also know that 3 feet of social distancing is expected.  We are limited to accept a total of 100 individuals per the State guidelines for any indoor services due to COVID. ....
