Martha J. Bradberry

April 22, 1922 ~ January 19, 2020 (age 97)

Obituary

Martha Jane Burnette Bradberry was a loving wife, mother, grandmother;
and a dear, precious friend.

Mrs. Martha, as she was affectionately called by many, was born in Dillon,
South Carolina on April 22, 1922 to the late Mr. Belthon Gibson and Mrs.
Bertha Burnett Gibson. She peacefully entered into eternal rest on Sunday
morning, January 19, 2020 at the blessed age of 97.

Martha attended Dillon Elementary before moving to Sandhills, Kinston and
Raleigh, North Carolina during her teenage years.

Martha married Lonnie Bradberry, the love of her life, and for a time the
Bradberrys lived and worked in Baltimore, Maryland, before making Raleigh
their permanent home. To this union one child, Nora Lonnetta Bradberry,
was born. Mrs. Martha’s only grandson, DeAntony Q. Bradberry, was the
apple of her eye. She was his “Ma” and he was her “Binky”. The two had a
special bond. Many days you could find them sitting together on the front
porch enjoying each other’s company.

Martha accepted Christ at an early age. She was a very active and longtime
member of Tupper Memorial Baptist Church. Over a decade ago, Mrs.
Martha joined a faithful bible study group that became the Fully Committed
Baptist Church. She was the Church’s oldest member. Her time of labor in
the church included serving on the hospitality committee, usher board, senior
ministry, singing in the choir, and attending Sunday school.

Martha worked in a vinegar refinery and the textile industry from Blowing
Rock to Raleigh. She was employed at Peace College and served as an
elevator operator in a bank in downtown Raleigh, before joining the Wake
County Public School System. In 1987, Martha retired from Wake County
Public Schools where she was a custodian at Athens High.

Martha had a special gift for baking delicious cakes. Her homemade pound
cakes were the best sweet treats. Baking was a gift she learned from her
mother. Martha’s talents did not stop at baking. She made her own clothes.
Her style was impeccable and fashion forward. Martha loved the color pink.
If you ever got a chance to just sit and talk with Mrs. Martha, you immediately
felt the warmth of her personality; the sharp wit of her mind; and the
toughness of her spirit. To some she radiated like sunshine, to others she was
full of knowledge, wisdom and laughter.

Martha is preceded in death by her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Belthon Gibson;
husband, Lonnie Bradberry; daughter, Nora Bradberry; grandson, DeAntony
Bradberry; and her sibling. Mrs. Bradberry leaves to cherish her memories,
her beloved church family, Fully Committed Baptist Church; special friends
and caregivers, Cuetonus Moore, Courtney Davis, Vedesa Lea, Cora Hocutt,
Doris K. McCain, and Tomiko Hicks; and a host of friends.
