Louis Robert Ballentine, Jr. was born on December 10, 1934, in Raleigh, North Carolina, the eldest child of Lewis R. Ballentine, Sr. and Clara Matthews Ballentine. Affectionately known as “Daddy Louis,” he was called home to be with our Heavenly Father on October 8, 2025.
Louis’s life was defined by faith, service, and an unwavering love for family. He joined Watts Baptist Church in Raleigh at an early age, where his spiritual foundation was formed. A proud graduate of Berry O’Kelly High School (Class of 1953), Louis went on to attend Shaw University, later earning a degree in Mortuary Science. He began his professional journey at Haywood Funeral Home in Raleigh (1957–1958) before enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1959, serving his country honorably during the Korean War era.
After his military service, Louis moved to New York City with his beloved wife, Katie, where he continued his calling at Jones Funeral Home and later built a distinguished career with the New York City Department of Correction. Known for his integrity, compassion, and work ethic, Louis also became a successful real estate investor, leaving behind a legacy of vision and perseverance.
Louis was full of life and wisdom—known for his humor, energy, and love of fine cars. A true Sagittarius, he had a zest for adventure and a magnetic presence that brought joy to all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Katie, his brothers Rufus and Arthur Lee, and his loving parents.
He leaves to cherish his memory: sisters Chestina (Owen) Dunston and Acquanetta Hicks; children Micheal R. Watkins, Sr., Louis R. (Caroline) Ballentine, III, Shawn T. Ballentine, Nicole S. Cameron, and Michele Sidney; grandchildren Amanda (Sean) Thompson, Micheal “Ross” Watkins, Jr., Claudia Sidney, Ajani Ballentine, Marina Jones, Shawn Andall, Tearle Ballentine, Hayleigh McInniss, and Kaycee Frank; great-grandchildren Carlyle Andall, Sterling Thompson, and Vaughn Thompson; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends who will miss him deeply.
