DEACON KELVIN JEROME GUNTER SR
Kelvin Jerome Gunter, Sr. (57) , affectionately known as “Big Kelvin”, was a man whose presence filled every room with love, laughter, and warmth. He was a gentle giant with a servant’s heart. He lived his life with purpose, passion, and deep care for everyone he encountered.
Kelvin was born October 27, 1967 in Raleigh NC to the late Reverend Handy Gunter Sr. and Elnora Gunter. Kelvin peacefully passed departed this life on Saturday October 4, 2025; leaving behind a legacy rooted in Faith, Family, and Love.
Kelvin was a graduate of Athens Drive High school in Raleigh NC. Kelvin began working at an early age with the Wake County Public School System driving school buses. Kelvin later began his career at Raleigh Durham Airport Police department in 1989. After many years there, Kelvin switched careers driving buses for the Capital Area Transit. He furthered his career by acquiring CDL license in Dallas Tx. Kelvin then worked for Waste Industries/Republic Services until his retirement in 2015. Kelvin was a man who could not stop working. He started delivering flowers for Garner Florist, Solomon’s Porch Florist, and Kirk’s Florist. In 2023, Kelvin started his entrepreneurial journey by starting The Gunter Enterprise Inc Cleaning Service where he provided excellent services to multiple clients.
Kelvin was a devoted member of The Lord’s Church Worship Center, where he served faithfully as an Armor Bearer and Deacon. His walk with God was evident not only in his service to the church, but also in the way he lived – with Compassion, Humility, and Heart. He was a proud lifelong Pittsburgh Steelers fan, regardless of their season record. Kelvin loved football, whether with family, friends, acquaintances, or strangers; Kelvin brought people together with great grilled food, big laughs and fellowship.
Kelvin was deeply committed to giving back to the community. He frequently volunteered for the Federal and State program (The Second Chance Act). Kelvin was also a strong leader and devoted member of the Prayer H2O ministry.
He left to cherish his memory is his devoted wife of 38 years, Minister Annette Roberts-Gunter (also known as his “ Sweet Thang”); two sons, Kelvin J Gunter Jr and Brandon L Gunter; his loving mother Elnora W Gunter, five grandchildren, Kelvin J Gunter III, Kamiyah J Gunter, Karma J Gunter, Kingsley J Gunter, and Koi J Gunter; three sisters Michelle Dawson, Nicole Stewart, and Dionne Gunter; stepmother Vivian Gunter, stepsisters Pamela Kendrick, Kathy Noble, Cheryl Fennell-Blakes, stepbrother Eric Fennell; two dear aunts Rose Williams (Earl), Lovely Ann Fleming, four uncles William Wilson (Vanessa), Vann Wilson (Thomasena), Joseph Gunter, Wilbert Gunter (Christine); and a host of nieces, nephews cousins, and friends.
Kelvin is reunited in Heaven with his father the Reverend Handy Gunter Jr, grandmother “Sweet Peaches” Noronia Wilson, grandfather Moses Wilson, grandmother Ida Gunter, Mother in law Pastor Catherine P Roberts, and father in law William L Roberts Sr.

Funeral service 11:00 AM Saturday October 11, 2025 at the C A Haywood, Sr. Memorial Chapel, 2415 South Wilmington Street, Raleigh, NC 27603. Public viewing Friday October 10, 2025 from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Haywood. Visitation Saturday begins at 10:30 AM prior to the service.
