James Edward Stallings was born in Raleigh, North Carolina to the late Carrie Lee and Henry Stallings. He was baptized at First Baptist Church. He graduated from Washington High School and Shaw University.
He taught school at Shepard High School in Zebulon, North Carolina until 1957 when he relocated to New York City to become his father’s caretaker. While caring for his father, he acquired a job as a case worker with the City of New York’s Department of Social Services. James was an active member of Shiloh Baptist Church. His favorite activity while there was singing in the choir.
In May of 1992, he retired from the Department and returned to North Carolina to care for his ailing mother. Upon his return to Raleigh, he rejoined First Baptist Church and volunteered on the missionary team. He also prepared the weekly church bulletins for distribution and mailing to the sick and shut-in and assisted with preparing for repast activities.
James was a strong promoter and supporter of the Shaw University National Alumni Association, an active member of the Madonna Acres Community Association’s Neighborhood Watch, and his precinct’s Democratic Party.
He loved baking cakes – especially pound cakes and coconut cakes with lemon filling between each layer.
While James was an only child, he is survived by his partner of fifty-two years, Moses Daniel Parker; his godson, James Darden, of Flora Park, New York; and his goddaughter, Rita Taylor of Lake Mary, Florida.
