Gary L. Lacy Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Dr. Gary L. Lacy on December 24, 2023, at his home, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on November 29, 1949, in Prichard, AL to George and Ruby Lacy, Gary lived a life dedicated to education, mentorship, and service to others.

A proud alumnus of Shaw University for his undergraduate studies, Bowie State University for his master’s degree, and Virginia Tech, where he earned his doctorate.  Dr. Lacy was a lifelong learner and advocate for the transformative power of education. His commitment to making the world a better place for children was unwavering, and he spent his career training educators to inspire and uplift the next generation.

In addition to his professional achievements, Dr. Lacy cherished a 51-year marriage with his beloved wife, Terry (nee Richardson). Together, they weathered the joys and challenges of life, creating a legacy built on love, resilience, and shared dreams. Though preceded in death by his daughter Detra in 2016, Dr. Lacy's devotion to family continued through his surviving daughter, Xavier (Andre), and his cherished grandchildren, Alexandre and Avah.

Dr. Lacy's service to his country was reflected in his honorable tenure in the United States Navy, a testament to his commitment to something greater than himself. Beyond his military service, he generously gave his time to coaching baseball and basketball, instilling in young minds the values of teamwork, discipline, and perseverance. His dedication extended further as he mentored African-American young men, leaving an indelible mark on their lives.

The impact of Dr. Lacy's legacy is evident in the countless lives he touched as a teacher, mentor, and friend. He found joy in the success of his former students, celebrating their achievements as they climbed the career ladder, published papers, and authored books. His passion for education and belief in the potential of every individual created ripples of positive change that will be felt for generations.

Dr. Gary Lacy will be dearly missed by his family, friends, former co-workers, and students. His memory will live on in the countless lives he influenced and the enduring impact of his contributions to education and mentorship. May he rest in peace, knowing that his legacy continues to inspire and uplift those who were fortunate enough to know him.
