Eunice Bernice Young Joyner was born on July 15, 1928 to the late Walter and Ethel (Lightner) Young in Bowling green, VA. She departed from this earthly life on June 16, 2020 at Laurels of Forest Glen nursing home in Garner, NC. Her early life was spent in Bowling Green, VA and Bricks, NC. In 1935, her family moved to Raleigh, NC. She enjoyed life on the farm with her mother, Uncle John and nine siblings. Her family soon joined Davie Street Presbyterian church. Eunice joined the choir at an early age. Her beautiful soprano voice could be heard in the Davie street Presbyterian choir for nearly 70 years. Eunice also worked in the youth department, Sunday school and acted on several committees in the church.
Eunice attended Washington High school in Raleigh, NC for grades 1-12. She was an excellent student and member of the honor society and glee club. Later in life, Eunice co-founded the Washington high school alumni association. After finishing high school, Eunice attended Johnson C. Smith university majoring in elementary education. She was a proud alumnus and charter member of the Raleigh-Durham Chapter of the Johnson C. Smith University alumni Association.
Her first job out of college was in Warrenton, NC. It was in Warrenton that Eunice met the love of her life, the late James A. Joyner. They married on June 24, 1953 and enjoyed 64 years of marriage. They were blessed with one daughter, Wanda. Eunice and James were very active in their churches and community and enjoyed traveling around the US. Eunice taught in Wake County schools for over 30 years. She immensely enjoyed teaching and mentoring young children. As a results of Eunice’s generous spirit and warm personality, she is loved and respected by many.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Wanda Weaver(William) of Charlotte, NC; five grandchildren, Audrey Weaver(Zee) of silver springs, MD , Dewanna Weaver of Beaufort,S.C, Dominique Weaver of Charlotte, NC, Jarvis Weaver of Raleigh, NC and Anthony Weaver of Charlotte, NC; seven great grandchildren; one sister Delores Hill of Charlotte, NC; one sister-in-law Annette Young of Harrisburg, NC and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral service at 12:00 noon Saturday June 27, 2020 at the C.A. Haywood, Sr. Memorial Chapel preceded by an 11:30 AM visitation. Interment will follow at Carolina Biblical Gardens. Viewing from 2:00 - 8:00 PM Friday June 26, 2020 at Haywood Funeral Home.
