Emily Rose Goode Obituary

Emily Rose Morgan Goode, 93, entered God’s Heavenly Kingdom on Monday, January 30, 2023.

Emily was born November 16, 1929 in Raleigh, and was the daughter of the late Claudius Wesley Morgan and Carrie Hicks Morgan. She attended grade school and high school in Raleigh and graduated from Shaw University with a B.A. degree in English and a minor in Social Studies. She did further study in library science at North Carolina Central University. Emily married Robert Akins Goode (Chase) on December 8, 1951. As a military spouse, Emily enjoyed living and working in several states and abroad - - Germany, France, Turkey, Arizona, California, New Mexico, Maryland, and Alaska. She worked as the base librarian in Turkey and as a teacher on several military bases where they were stationed. Emily and Chase returned to their Raleigh birthplace in 1976 following Chase’s retirement from the United States Air Force (USAF). After returning to Raleigh, Emily taught fifth grade at Cary Elementary School before retiring in 1990.

During her adult life, Emily’s passion for travel and learning about other cultures was further realized by visiting England, Greece, Jerusalem, Canada, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, Mexico and West Africa. She was a lifelong member of Wilson Temple United Methodist Church in Raleigh, which was built on land that her great-great grandfather Wilson W. Morgan donated. She served as the church historian for several years, sang on the church choir, and was active with many church committees. She was active with the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Royalettes Civic and Social Club, Top Ladies of Distinction, Wake County Unit of Retired School Personnel, and American Mothers, Inc., the organization that is recognized by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the official sponsor of Mother’s Day. In 1996, Emily was selected as North Carolina Mother of the Year by American Mothers, Inc. and traveled to Lincoln, NE with her family to compete with other state mothers for the National Mother of the Year title.

Emily also enjoyed reading, watching game shows, and working crossword and jigsaw puzzles. And, she enjoyed time spent for several years fellowshipping with her Tuesday afternoon Bonanza friends and family members – Pearle Flower, Gwen Farrar, Claudia Johnson, Nurry Johnson, Mildred Massey, Joyce Morgan, Margaret Peebles, Mable Patterson and Delores Wilder.

Emily was predeceased by her loving husband of 53 years, Robert “Chase” Goode, her parents Claudius and Carrie Morgan, two sisters, Ann Wilson and Claudia Johnson, and her granddaughter Morgan Throckmorton. At marriage, she became Mama Rose to Robert Hunter (Saundra). Also from that union, Emily was the proud mother of four daughters, Karen Throckmorton (Romie), Sharon Laisure (Floyd), Michelle McLean (Johnny), and Sabrina Goode; and two sons, Roger and Gregory Goode. In addition, she is survived by her sister, Joyce Morgan and her grandchildren, Jadrian Throckmorton; Maria and Sean Laisure; MeKayla McLean; Chase and Myla Goode; and four great-grandchildren, Aliyah Walker, Jayden and Amaya Laisure, and Hakeem Prince.
