Effie Sanders Lucas was born May 1, 1926 to William J. Sanders
and Lottie Barbour Sanders. She was the fifth of thirteen children.
Effie departed this life August 12, 2020. She was married to
Theodore R. Lucas for forty-four years.
Effie attended school in Johnston County and graduated from W.
Mason Cooper High School. She matriculated to Fayetteville State
and North Carolina Central Universities obtaining a BS and MA
Degree in Elementary Education.
Effie completed over thirty years of teaching in the Johnston and
Wake County School Systems. Her tenure ended at Wilburn Elementary School in Raleigh, NC.
Effie, a devout Christian, attended Johnston Piney Grove Missionary Baptist Church and New Trinity
Missionary Baptist Church. She served faithfully as the President of the Senior Choir, Missionary Circle and
was the first female Deacon.
Effie often attended Saint Stevens Baptist Church, Spring Hope, NC, with her husband and was faithful in
attendance. In addition to educational organizations, Effie was a member of the Eta Chapter of Guys and
Dolls, Inc., and the National Association of University Women (NAUW) and Y Wives (YWCA).
Effie was proceeded in death by her parents: William and Lottie Sanders; husband: Theodore R. Lucas;
seven sisters: Lucy Ansley, Jessie Sebree, Bettie Harris, Gertrude Avery, Shirley Newkirk, Matrie Judd and
Christine Hawkins; three brothers: Harden Sanders, Leon Sanders and Dr. Charles Sanders.
Effie leaves to cherish her precious memories, her beloved son: Kevin Chancellor Lucas (Charlotte) of
Knightdale, North Carolina; two grandchildren: Amber Lucas, of Atlanta, Georgia and Brandon Young of
Knightdale, North Carolina; two sisters: Mary S. Evans (Ernest) and Maxine S. Williams both of Raleigh,
North Carolina; relatives, Raymond Avery and George Newkirk both of Raleigh, North Carolina, William
Hawkins of Baltimore, Maryland, Reverend William Lucas (Joan) of Smithfield, North Carolina, Brenda
Lucas, and Luvenia Lucas both of Spring Hope, North Carolina, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral service at 12:00 noon Friday August 21, 2020 at the C.A. Haywood, Sr. Memorial Chapel preceded by an 11:30 AM visitation. Interment will follow at Carolina Biblical Gardens. Viewing from 2:00 - 8:00 PM Thursday August 20, 2020 at Haywood Funeral Home.
