Dorothy Steele Hicks Obituary

 

Deacon Dorothy Jean Steele Hicks, daughter of the late Mr. Oscar Steele, Sr.
and the late Mrs. Roberta Steele, was born on January 19, 1934 in Wake County, North Carolina. She
departed this life on September 9, 2021.

Dorothy was a graduate of Fuquay-Varina Consolidated High School, Fuquay-Varina, North
Carolina and a graduate of Civella Beauty College, Raleigh, North Carolina. She was married to Milton
Hicks, Jr. for 47 years. Dorothy was a wonderful wife, mother, homemaker and licensed cosmetologist for
almost fifty years.

At an early age, Dorothy joined Bazzel Creek Baptist Church. She served diligently and
faithfully until her death. Her duties and services to Bazzel Creek were many. Over the years, she served
as Sunday School Teacher, Assistant Orientation Class Leader, member of the Senior, Gospel and Mass
choirs, member of the Pastor’s Aide, Hospitality Ministry, Vice President of Senior Missionary Ministry,
member of the Noon-day Bible class, Advisor to the Youth and Adults of the Membership, and an Ordained
Deacon, who led the tribe of Zebulon.

Dorothy was active in other affiliations. These are a few of the organizations where she
served: 6th President of the Women’s Auxiliary of the New Hope Missionary Baptist Association,
Member of the Executive Board of the Woman’s Auxiliary, Finance Chairperson of the Woman’s
Auxiliary, Secretary for District #3 of the NHMBA, Trustee on the Land Committee for NHMBA,
Chairperson for the Deaconess Group of Woman’s Baptist Home & Foreign Missionary
Convention of Raleigh, North Carolina, Organizer of the first Fellowship Banquet in 1990 for the
Women’s Auxiliary and the New Hope Association, Member of the Scholarship committee, Assistant
Bible Teacher for the Woman’s Class of the New Hope Union, Treasurer for NHMBA Women’s
Auxiliary for 16 years, Worthy Matron of Silver-Leaf I40 OES PHA, Volunteer for the Western Wake Crisis
Ministry, Apex, North Carolina and a Board Member of Wake Opportunity, Raleigh, North Carolina.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Milton Hicks, Jr.; three brothers: Calvin,
Leon, and James; three sisters: Virginia, Winifred and Gertrude.

Surviving to cherish loving memories are her five daughters: Cynthia R. Hicks of Raleigh, NC, Jennifer H. Robinson (Marion) of Raleigh, NC,
Sharon H. Monroe (Floyd) of Creedmoor, NC, Angela H. Higdon (Samuel) of Apex, NC and Vicky K. Hicks
of the home (friend, Donnell of Fuquay-Varina, NC); two inherited sons, Scott and Kenneth Judd; eight
grandchildren: Shawn, Amelia (Joey), Benjamin, Christian, Jessica, DeAunna, Samuel, and Alison; ten
great grandchildren: Kyrei, Kayla, AJ, David, Ariel, Samantha, Paige, Joseph, Jordan and Austin; two
brothers: Arthur Steele of New York and Oscar Steele of Apex, NC; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Helen Hicks
of Cameron, NC and Mrs. Dillie Hicks Douglas of Jeffersonville, Indiana and a host of nieces, nephews,
other relatives and friends.

  Her Celebration of Life Service will be held on Tuesday, September 14, 2021 at 11:00 AM at Bazzel Creek Missionary Baptist Church, 1228 Wilbon Road, Fuquay-Varina, NC.  A Visitation will precede the service beginning at 10:30 AM.  On Monday September 13, 2021 there will be a public "walk through viewing" at the Haywood Funeral Home, 2415 South Wilmington Street, Raleigh, NC from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

***Please Note:  We are requesting that all in attendance wear a face covering or mask for the viewing, visitation, and service.  Also know that 3 to 6 feet of social distancing is expected.  .... Thank you for understanding.
