Deacon Sallye Brodie Winston Obituary

Deacon Sallye Brodie Winston, 96, of Raleigh, NC departed this earthly life on Friday June 23, 2023.  Funeral Service at 11:00 AM Saturday July 8, 2023 at Maple Temple United Church of Christ, 304 Dacian Road, Raleigh, NC 27610.  A visitation precedes the service at 10:30 AM.  The Interment will be at Carolina Biblical Gardens, 1530 Creech Road, Garner, NC 27529.

A public viewing will be held from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM Friday, July 7, 2023 at Haywood Funeral Home, 2415 South Wilmington Street, Raleigh, NC 27603.

Deacon Winston was born in Franklinton, North Carolina (NC), on June 23, 1927, to Hollie and Marshall Corenia Mann Brodie. She was one of twelve children. Throughout her life, Sallye Brodie Winston was active in the church. In Franklinton, she attended First United Church of Christ. She was a Maple Temple United Church of Christ member in Raleigh, NC.

Deacon Winston attended Franklinton County Public Schools. She graduated from B. F. Albion High School in Franklinton, NC. In 1946, Sallye earned a Bachelor of Arts in Home Economics from Shaw University in Raleigh, NC. In college, she joined Zeta Phi Beta Sorority.

In her lifetime, Deacon Winston held several positions in education and government.

She was a Math, Science, and Physical Education and Health teacher in Nash County Public Schools. Later, she worked as a ward secretary at Wake Medical Hospital, North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC, and at the Governor Morehead School as a House Parent. When she retired, periodically, she would serve as a substitute teacher at Love Christian Center Academy in Raleigh, NC.

Deacon Winston met her husband, the late Mr. Genadious Winston Jr., in Raleigh, NC.

Her most significant achievements would be her relationship with her husband and six children, serving her community, and her Maple Temple Church Family. Her ministry motto was Ready for service. Deacon Sallye Brodie Winston served as Sunday School Superintendent, chairperson of the former Deaconess Board, a part of the Women’s Ministry, in charge of Vacation Bible School, and led many clothing and food drives held by Maple Temple United Church of Church to help the poor and homeless of southeast Raleigh, NC. She loved her community and was always seen walking and talking to everyone in her neighborhood. Family always came first. Sallye Brodie Winston enjoyed planning and traveling on vacations with her family. Deacon Winston enjoyed singing in the choir at the Maple Temple United Church of Christ, shopping, music, exercising, reading, eating tasty food, and being secretary for the Raleigh Safety Club. She also enjoyed being a member of the Eastern Stars.

Deacon Winston departed her life on her 96th birthday, June 23, 2023. Her parents, daughter, Ms. Karen Winston, and son, Mr. Charles Winston, preceded her in death. She leaves to cherish her memories her daughters Mrs. Brenda Winston-Whitted of Boynton Beach, Fl., Dr. Evelyn Winston-Dadzie of Atlanta, GA, Mrs. Valeria Winston-Swoope of Boynton Beach, Fl; and son, Mr. Calvin Winston of Los Angeles, CA.; sisters: Ms. Barbara Kaye Montague, Atlantic City, NJ and Ms. Marea Glasco Brodie of Norlina, NC; one brother, Mr. Ralph Alphonzo Brodie of Louisburg, NC.

Additionally, she leaves a host of relatives, including six grandchildren Mr. Roland H. Whitted III of Weldon, NC; Mr. Brian D. Whitted of Weldon, NC; Dr. Charlene A. Dadzie of Mobile, Al; Mr. Genadious Blane Winston of Washington, DC, Ms. Aisha Swoope of Charlotte, NC, and Ms. Amira Swoope of Huntsville, Al and three great-grandchildren Mr. Christopher Harris-Whitted of Fayetteville, GA, Mr. Jayden Whitted of Ashoskie, NC and, Ms. Mikalya Miller-Whitted of Cary, NC.
