Darryl Jones was born in Harlem, New York, October 5,1959 to the late Anna L. Jones. His journey took him to his family’s home in Raleigh, NC, where he lived throughout his childhood. There he attended Crosby Garfield, Josephus Daniel’s and Jessie O. Sanders schools.
As a young man, he returned to New York, made his home and established himself as a fixture in the community. He was a talker, and was always eager to share tales of his life in the city he loved, New York. He was a follower of Jesus Christ, put that faith into action as a true disciple of Christ, repented his sins and put his faith in the Lord.
In 1996, Darryl met the love of his life, Fanta Kamagate, and they married February 3, 2001. They enjoyed 24 years of love and companionship before his death. Darryl took great pride in providing all that makes a house a home, and was father, grandfather, brother, uncle and mentor to many. He passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of loyalty, passion, and kindness.
His warmth and infectious enthusiasm for life left a lasting impression on everyone he met. Darryl was a proud and passionate Jets fan, a bond that defined much of his life. His devotion to his team, whether through triumphs or losses, was a testament to his character - steadfast, unwavering, and true.
For over two decades, Darryl was employed by Columbia University, where he was known for his exceptional dedication, reliability, and genuine care for others. He built close relationships with colleagues and students, always going above and beyond to help and support those around him. His love for his work was only rivaled by his love for his family, his church, Mt. Picgah Baptist, where he was ordained deacon/evangelist, friends and the Jets. He was a Gentle Giant, never met a stranger, all were welcomed.
Darryl’s journey through life was marked by resilience, loyalty, and an incredible sense of humor. His ability to brighten a room with a smile, a joke a handshake, a hug, made everyone feel welcome. He will be sorely missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
He is survived by his family, friends, and countless colleagues who will forever remember his spirited personality, his unwavering devotion to his loved ones, and let’s not forget the Jets.
He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife, Fanta K. Jones, son, Victor, four grandsons, Darryl, Jack, Kyliane and Ben, granddaughter, Fanta, the Kamagate family; Jones family first cousins: Beverly C. Jones, Debra A. Jones, Sandra L. Jones, William H. Jones III, (Felicia), Cousins, Andrea Kennedy (Kerry), Antwon Wright (Cristina), Veronica Gunn (Mel), a host of other cousins; Sister-in-Love, Gerry Covington, Nieces, Tasha N. Young, Zoie N. Young, Nephews, Casey J. Spencer, Caysen and Camryn Spencer, long-time friends, Jamel McIntosh, Johnny & Diane Simmons, and a host of other friends.
Rest in peace, Darryl. The Jets have lost one of their most loyal fans, but your spirit will live on in every game, every touchdown, and every victory—no matter how long it takes. And your Thanksgiving platter will be in place in your memory.
