Charles (Charlie) Powell

Mr. Charles (Charlie) Powell, 96, of Raleigh, NC departed this earthly life on Thursday November 21, 2024.  Sunrise March 9, 1928- Sunset November 21, 2024. 

Funeral service 12:00 PM Monday November 25, 2024 at the C A Haywood, Sr. Memorial Chapel, 2415 South Wilmington Street, Raleigh, NC 27603.

Friends, family, and the church may fail you, but God is unfailing, steadfast, and dependable!

Charles (Charlie) Powell, was born on March 9, 1928 in Johnston County, North
Carolina, he was born to Christine Jeffries and the Rev. Leondras Powell.

It was his maternal grandfather, Charlie Jeffries who was instrumental in his life, and instilled a strong sense of family values and hard work.

Charles attended Washington High School, upon graduation he enlisted in the United
States Navy during World War II and received an honorable discharge; he was then employed by
North Carolina State University School of Veterinary Medicine (Poultry Science Division), After
over 30 years of service retired from the United States Postal service, drove school buses for
Wake County for 13 years and started a landscaping company ( C&R seasonal landscaping)
with his favorite son in law Rufus Hockaday. Charles was married to the late Edna Kelly Powell
for 52 years.

Around the age of ten Charles' grandparents brought him to First Baptist Church, where
he served faithfully as an usher, Ward-Ingram gospel choir member, chairman of the deacon
board for 20 years, and member of the Golden Agers and senior ministry. Being active in his
community Charles served as a board member for the former Garner Road YMCA, election poll
volunteer, NAACP member, commander of the Woodrow Wilson chapter of the disabled
American Veterans for 15 years, member of Prince Hall Masonic lodge and Kabala Temple
#177.
Those left to cherish his memories are his daughter Fern Powell Hockaday and husband
Rufus Hockaday, grandchildren Christian Powell, Chadd Hockaday and wife Keesha, Zina
Hockaday and 9 Great-grandchildren, along with a host of relatives, and friends.
