Calvin Alonza Winston Obituary

Calvin Alonza Winston, 66, passed away peacefully Tuesday, May 20 at Rex Hospital UNC Health surrounded by his family. He was born on October 1, 1958, in Raleigh, NC. He was so loved by his family and co-workers at Publix. Calvin grew up and was baptized at Maple Temple United Church of Christ and graduated from William G. Enloe High School. He attended North Carolina Central University where he studied and was so fond of Business Administration with a concentration in finance.

He later lived and worked in Los Angeles, California and Washington, DC., two cities that he loved so much for a part of his life.   Known for his kindness, Calvin loved meeting people, traveling domestically to San Francisco, California, Boise, Idaho, Houston, Texas and internationally to Brussels, Belgium, Paris, France, and Accra, Ghana, West Africa. He also loved music and was an avid reader and lifelong learner.

He was preceded by his father, Genadious Winston Jr., his mother, Sallye Brodie Winston, his brother, Charles Winston, and sister Karen Winston. He is survived by his sisters Brenda (Winston) Whitted, Evelyn (Winston) Dadzie, Ph.D., and Valeria (Winston) Swoope, his nephews, Roland Hayes Whitted, Brian Whitted, Genadious Blane Winston and his nieces, Charlene Dadzie, Ph.D., Aisha Swoope and Amira Swoope, his brother-in-law, Kofi Dadzie, Ph.D., his ex-wife, Gloria Mackie, and a host of cousins, and dear friends.

A celebration of Calvin’s life will be held in The C A Haywood, Sr. Memorial Chapel, 2415 S. Wilmington Steet, Raleigh, NC. 27603, Saturday June 7, 2025. Visitation will begin at 11: 30 AM, at the funeral home and the funeral will follow at 12:00 PM. Interment will be at Carolina Biblical Gardens, 1530 Creech Road, Garner, NC. 27529

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society on-line at "donate.cancer.org" or by calling (1-800-227-2345). 

The family thanks the staff at Rex Hospital UNC Health, Heartland Hospice, and his former caregiver, Cassandra Wright, Chief Apostle, Ph.D., for their compassionate care.  Additionally, we would like to thank Reverend K. Ray Hill for his spiritual guidance.
