Bobby Matthews was born on April 28, 1939, to the late Dallas and Frances Matthews. He departed this life peacefully early Tuesday morning, March 23, 2021, after an extended illness. Bobby accepted Christ at an early age and joined Watts Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. His faithful service did not go unnoticed, and he eventually became an ordained Deacon. Due to his extended illness, he became Deacon Emeritus in 2019.
Bobby graduated from Ligon High School in 1958. As an avid athlete in high school, he played basketball and football, with football being his true love. Bobby was involved in the community and loved coaching little league baseball and city league football.
Bobby was employed for over 30 years at Westinghouse. During his time at Westinghouse, he took several classes at NC State and became a big “Wolfpack Fan.”
Bobby was united in holy matrimony to his middle school sweetheart Janet Marie Hopkins. They were married for 63 years, and out of this union, they had four children. Bobby was a loving and caring husband and father. Nothing on this earth made him happier than spending time with his family. Bobby was preceded in death by his youngest son, Ronnie Dell Matthews.
Bobby leaves to cherish precious memories: the love of his life, his wife, Janet Matthews of the home; two sons: Cedric A. Matthews (Julie) of Raleigh, NC, Gregory A. Matthews (Diane) of Raleigh, NC, and one daughter: Renee Robinson (Jeffrey) of Raleigh, NC; one much-beloved sister Delores Matthews; one half-brother Richard Chavis; eight grandchildren: Melonie Tafirenyika (Biko), Travis Matthews (Porchia), Anthony Matthews, Jurell Matthews (Sade), Victoria Robinson, Kaille Matthews, Jordan-Marie Robinson, and Jeffrey Robinson; five great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; nieces and nephews that he loved dearly; two sisters-in-law: Carolyn Baxter(Edward) of Raleigh, Carol Hopkins of Newark New Jersey; two brother-in-laws: Clayton Hopkins (Edith) and Earl McCoy of Fayetteville; and a host of other family members who he loved dearly.
