Attorney Larry Sylvester Height

Attorney Larry S. Height, 69, of Raleigh, NC departed this earthly life on Friday December 1, 2023.  A Memorial Service is scheduled for Tuesday December 12, 2023 at 12:00 PM at Poplar Springs Christian Church, 6115 Old Stage Road, Raleigh, NC. 27603. The family visitation will begin at 11:30 AM.  A public viewing will be held at Haywood Funeral Home Monday from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM, with family members present during the 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM time frame.

Attorney Height is survived by a son, Dana J. Height and a daughter, Justice M. Height, both of Raleigh, NC. He is also survived by a brother, Bobby L. Height, Sr. of Charlotte, NC.  Family will accept visitors nightly starting Friday December 8th and Saturday December 9th from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at 1905 Hadley Road, Raleigh, NC 27610.  On Sunday December 10th the family will accept visitors from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at 1905 Hadley Road.

ATTORNEY LARRY SYLVESTER HEIGHT

(November 9, 1954 to December 1, 2023)

LARRY SYLVESTER HEIGHT was born in Raleigh NC to the late George Sylvester Height and the late Elsie Bumpers Height on Tuesday, November 9, 1954.

Larry was a member of Broughton High School Graduating Class 1972; member of Class of 1976 from North Carolina Central University with Bachelors of Arts degree in Political Science (Magna Cum Laude). While at NCCU, he was also a member of the NCCU CIAA championship team and was initiated at the chapter of NCCU, Alpha Kappa, of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. on April13, 1974.  When deciding to attend law school, he was accepted at Marquette Law School (Milwaukee, Wisconsin) and Columbia Law School (New York, NY), but chose to attend the University North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Law and obtained his Juris Doctorate in December 1981.

Attorney Larry Sylvester Height had 25 years of legal experience.

Served in both government and private practice handling a number of legal matters ranging from Criminal Defense (Jury Trials); Personal Injury Lawsuits; Federal Appeals; ABC violations to Worker's Compensation cases before the N. C. Industrial Commission

Clerked for the United States Attorney's Office for the Eastern District between the 2nd and 3rd year at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Law

Worked as an Assistant State's Attorney for Dade County (Miami, Florida) under former United States Attorney General Prosecutor Janet Reno.

Functioned as an Agency Legal Specialist for nine (9) years, the last two (2) of which, was Chief Agency Legal Specialist. Supervised three (3) Attorneys. Prosecuted alcohol violations Statewide. Was the Hearing Officer until the State created the Office of Administrative Hearings for that purpose.

Developed a program for Statewide Alcohol Awareness for College Students that involved the member Universities of the sixteen (16) North Carolina Constituent University System. A day and one half conference addressing campus issues concerning the use of alcohol. The conference was sponsored by the Commission in conjunction with the Governor's Highway Safety Program. Included speakers such as Juanita Bias, Mother of Lynn Bias; Bobby Jones, UNC and former NBA star; Louis Gossett, Jr., Actor; and Al McGuire, former NCAA Basketball Championship Coach of the Marquette Warriors.

Handled Water and Environmental issues as a Staff Attorney for eight (8) years with the N. C. Utilities Commission which required working closely with the General Assembly on these matters.

Entered private practice specializing in Criminal Defense, Traffic Matters and Personal Injury cases. Offices in Raleigh and Clinton, N. C.

He is survived by two loving children:  son Dana J. Height (Susan); and a daughter Justice M. Height; a devoted brother Bobby L. Height Sr., (Brenda) of Charlotte, NC; six grandchildren:  DeJuan Turner (San Jose, CA), Dominic Height, Kylan Height, Akira Height, Kyla Height and Taylor Height all of Raleigh; a dear niece Bridget Height-Williams of Charlotte; and special nephew Bobby L. Height, II (Erica) of Atlanta, GA.
