Alfred “Al” Glover was born on October 28, 1939, in Charleston, South Carolina, as the first child of the late Annabelle Manning Glover and the late Herbert Glover Sr. On February 18, 2025, he peacefully transitioned into the arms of his loving Savior at home in Raleigh, North Carolina, surrounded by his devoted wife, children, and grandchildren.
In 1962, Al married his college sweetheart, Patricia “Pat” Ann Morgan. Together, they built a beautiful life, blessed with 65 years of love and companionship. Their union was graced with two children, Deborah Ann Glover Reid and Kevin Glover Sr., who brought immeasurable joy to their lives.
Al’s passion for basketball began under the guidance of Holcomb Rucker, founder of the legendary “Rucker League” in Harlem. As one of the league’s original players in the early 1950s, he quickly emerged as a standout, known for his exceptional talent, leadership, and ability to both score and elevate his teammates' play. One of his most memorable high school experiences was competing in the 1958 PSAL preliminary playoff games at Madison Square Garden for the divisional championship. As captain of his high school basketball team, he was named Most Valuable Player in both his junior and senior years. In 1958, he played in the High School All-Star Game in New Jersey and was later inducted into his high school’s Wall of Fame.
Despite being heavily recruited by South Dakota, Al accepted a full athletic scholarship to St. Augustine’s College, where he played as a starter and co-captain for four consecutive years under Coach Jesse Clements. In his senior year, he was honored as the team’s Most Valuable Player. His leadership extended beyond the court, as he was chosen to represent St. Augustine’s at the Peace Corps Conference and the "Crossroad to Africa" conference at the campus library.
Al earned his B.A. in Physical Education from St. Augustine’s College and later obtained a Master’s Degree in Health Education from Long Island University. His career with the New York City Board of Education spanned 34 years, during which he served as an assistant principal, high school basketball coach, girls’ track and gymnastics coach, dean of discipline, director of a school for socially maladjusted students, health education teacher, and director of after-school programs. His dedication and commitment to education left a lasting impact on countless students.
His many accolades include:
● United Federation of Teachers, NYC – Recognition for 34 years of exemplary service
● Community District 6 Superintendent – Commendation for his dedication to students and parents
● State of New York Fishkill Correctional Facility – Certificate of Recognition for Volunteer Service
Al was an active member of numerous professional organizations and civic groups, including the Prince Hall Masonic Temple Lodge Jappa #5, the Triangle Society – Raleigh Capital City Club, Eppo – The Raleigh Chapter of National Epicureans, Inc., and Hums – The Raleigh Chapter of Chums, Inc. He was a lifelong supporter of St. Augustine’s College, serving on the Falcon Foundation Board of Directors as Vice President for Development. In recognition of his outstanding athletic achievements, he was inducted into the St. Augustine’s College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005 and the Rucker Professional Hall of Fame in 2007.
In retirement, Al found joy on the golf course, often playing at Hedingham Golf and Athletic Club or hitting balls with friends Larry Clark and Rich Langan at Wendell Country Club.
Al will be remembered for his boundless generosity, warm smile, and magnetic personality. He never met a stranger—always ready to engage in conversation and brighten someone’s day. His love for life and devotion to his family, especially his grandchildren, created cherished memories that will endure for generations.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to his team of doctors for their dedicated care, which gave us the gift of more precious time with him.
