J. Samuel Hewitt

Mr. J. Samuel Hewitt, 96, of Raleigh, NC departed this earthly life on Thursday September 19, 2019.  

Jerome Samuel Hewitt (Sam) was born March 9, 1923 to the late Robert and Rosa Hewitt in Welch, West Virginia. He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Frances, a son, Jerome Samuel Jr. (Sammy), and siblings: Herbert, Lawrence, Pauline, Robert Jr., Evelyn, and Neportia.

Mr. Hewitt graduated from Kimball Negro High School in 1942 and from Shaw University in 1951. He became a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity while attending Shaw and was a Lifetime Member. He was a WWII Veteran and a member of the old Army Air Corps and was honorably discharged in 1947.

On December 7, 1951, Sam was united in holy matrimony to Laura Frances Dunston and to this union Kim, Sammy, Vicki, Brett, and Maria were born.

Sam was a charter member of St. Joseph Catholic Church where he was a member of the Knights of Columbus, served as a Eucharistic Minister, was a Lector, and a member of the Parish Council before his health declined.

Sam leaves to cherish his memory Kim Hewitt (Bill Gregg), Vicki Hewitt-McNeil (Ronald McNeil), Brett Hewitt, and Maria Hewitt: his grandchildren, Jerome Jenkins, Angela Hewitt (Ree-Ree), Emmanuel, Ashley Hewitt, Tyler Hewitt, and Hewitt Rogers; his great-grandchildren, Jayla Jenkins, Synfanie Jenkins, Jeniya Jenkins, Kirena Hubbard, Aiyra Hewitt, Asis Hewitt, Forrest Peterson and Charlie Hicks: special caregiver, Yolandia Bowers-Langhorn.

Memorial service at 1:00 PM Tuesday September 24, 2019 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 2809 Poole Road Raleigh, NC preceded by a 12:30 PM visitation.
