Dr. Charles Haywood was born in Wake County, North Carolina, the youngest of 8 children, of Chesley Cabot Haywood, Sr and Berta Rush Haywood on November 11, 1929.  He began his early school years in High Point, North Carolina graduating from William Penn High School. He matriculated at Shaw University for his undergraduate degree, North Carolina Central University for his Masters and Howard University for his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS).  He was married to Julia Joyner and Annie Isler.

He served in the Army and was a veteran of the Korean War.

He was a dentist for over 40 years. At Doc’s practice on Hargett Street you could find him practicing dentistry and in addition you could find him having conversations about the politics, life lessons and his faith.  A true believer in Christ, Doc’s passion was sharing teaching duties in Sunday School for St. Paul AME Men’s Sunday School class. He also attended Sunday School at First Baptist and Wilson Temple United Methodist church. Doc loved talking about Jesus and sharing his life experiences in faith with family and others. At his office Doc was always willing to hold a conversation. Doc also enjoyed fishing with his favorite short rod with four (4) hooks attached.

Charles is preceded in death by his Father, Chesley Cabot Haywood, and his Mother, Berta Haywood, brothers Edmond, Chesley, Timothy, Titus, James Haywood and sister Mary Jane  (Ann) Grady. He is also preceded in death by wives Annie P. Haywood (2013) and Julia Marie Joyner Haywood (1968), son-in-law Donald Sanders.

Charles is lovingly survived by sons Charles L. and Julian Kris A. (Brigette) Haywood, daughters Theresa Charlene (Will) and Bernestina Sanders and Norman Joyner ( Pat ) who held a special place.
