Ronald Edward Burke Obituary

Ronald “Ronnie” Edward Burke, a spirited and talented individual, passed away in Raleigh, NC, on April 4, 2024.  Born on January 7, 1964, in Raleigh, to the late Doris McLean Burke and Johnnie Edward Burke, Ronald journeyed through life with a great passion for sports, unwavering academic dedication, and profound love for music.

From his early days, Ronald exhibited an unique zest for life and sports. His athleticism shone brightly as he enjoyed participating in football, baseball, basketball, and track—“lettering” in high school.  He had a great love of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.  He also loved playing ping pong in the basement with his friends and, occasionally, he would even play with his sister.  Beyond the fields and courts, Ronald was also a brilliant orator, clinching the prestigious James F. Wertz Oratorical Contest at First Baptist Church, his spiritual home where he was baptized in his youth, and showcasing his talents across the state.

Ronald's academic journey was as remarkable as his extracurricular pursuits.  He maintained perfect attendance from nursery school through 12th grade, a testament to his dedication and resilience.  A proud graduate of Athens Drive High School in 1982, he was part of the first class to complete their entire high school studies there.  He was extremely gifted in the classroom, and never missed an opportunity to have fun.

Ronald continued his educational journey at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology in just three years by 1985.  In college he enjoyed playing intramural sports and taking his sister to see the Tar Heels play basketball at Carmichael Auditorium (now Arena) and to Robert B. House Undergraduate Library and Davis Library to work on her research papers.

Ronald’s affinity for the North Carolina State Wolfpack—despite being a UNC alumnus and huge fan of the Tar Heels—highlighted his deep-rooted connection to the sports community.  He also enjoyed attending Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) tournaments with his family in his youth.  He cherished the moments spent in downtown Raleigh, and his encounters with sports legends like David Thompson (facilitated by his cousin Jackie) and Kobe Bryant were among his treasured memories.  He was also a sports trivia whiz.  Ronald's love for sports was paralleled by his love for music, boasting an enviable album collection and participating in school choruses and bands.

Professionally, Ronald carved out a successful career as a freelance sports photographer, capturing the thrilling moments of the games he loved, and as a sports apparel marketer.  He covered professional and college sports, including the NFL, the NBA, and the Women’s World Cup.  His signature style, often accented with Ray-Ban sunglasses and Drakkar Noir cologne, made him a memorable figure.

Ronald loved seafood, and in his youth gave an all-you-can-eat seafood restaurant in Mission Valley a run for its money!  Most of all, he loved his mother’s cooking.  He also loved working with her at the polls for Precinct 01-22.

Ronald’s memory is cherished by his sister, Marcilynn Burke of Eugene, OR; his aunt, Inez J. McLean of Tuscumbia, AL; his favorite cousin, Jacquelyn Henry of Suitland, MD; and a legion of cousins and friends who felt his impact deeply.  The family extends heartfelt thanks to David Beasley, Kenneth Williamson, and the numerous others whose support was invaluable throughout his journey.

Ronald was predeceased by his loving parents, Doris and Johnnie Burke, and his sister, Pamela Arnetta Burke.
